Early Tuesday, MTV released the nominations for its annual Video Music Awards, and Nicki Minaj had a lot to say about not being nominated in the coveted Video of the Year category for “Anaconda” or for her “Feelin’ Myself” collaboration with Beyoncé.
Last August, “Anaconda” broke a record for VEVO, YouTube’s site for music videos, with 19.6 million views in its first 24 hours. It took over the internet with discussions of the videos racy content, memes were lauched from the cover art and Ellen DeGeneres did her own remake of the video. The video sseemed like an obvious contender, but despite the accolades “Anaconda” was not included as a contender for the top prize at 2015 MTV Video Music Awards.
Not shy about speaking her mind, Nicki Minaj took to Twitter to express her discontent in a series of Tweets.
If I was a different “kind” of artist, Anaconda would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well. 😊😊😊

Ellen did her own anaconda video and did the #choreo lol. Remember her doing that kick 😩. Even mtv did a post on the choreo @MTV remember? — NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
U couldn’t go on social media w/o seeing ppl doing the cover art, choreo, outfits for Halloween…an impact like that & no VOTY nomination?

When the “other” girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊 — NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

In the midst of the rant, Taylor Swift read into Minaj’s tweets as a jab at her music, and responded.
@NICKIMINAJ I’ve done nothing but love & support you. It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot.. — Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) July 21, 2015
To which the rapper responded:
Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn’t say a word about u. I love u just as much. But u should speak on this. @taylorswift13

Minaj followed up with a deeper explanation of her rant.
I’m not always confident. Just tired. Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it. https://t.co/2xOvJzBXJX — NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
It’s not even any shade to the other artists. It’s just that Nicki is getting snubbed for doing the same thing they’re winning awards for.

Minaj didn’t have much else to say, but she continued to retweet fans who agreed with the point she wanted to make.
Do yo agree with Nicki Minaj or do you think the rant was too much? Let us know in the comments!
