Whitney Houston Biopic

Despite the unsavory reviews of their Aaliyah biopic, Lifetime is all set to premiere its biopic for the late singer Whitney Houston on the network next month. Directed by Angela Bassett and starring model Yaya DaCosta, Whitney will tell the story of the legendary singer.

Whitney chronicles the headline-making relationship between the iconic singer, actress, producer and model Whitney Houston and singer and songwriter Bobby Brown from the time they first met at the very height of their celebrity to their courtship and tumultuous marriage,” the press release reads. “Throughout it all, difficulties followed the superstar couple while they dealt with the overwhelming rewards and consequences of the fame and fortune created by Houston’s meteoric rise that would soon overshadow them both.”

Alongside DaCosta, Arlen Escarpeta will star as Bobby Brown, Suzzanne Douglas as Cissy Houston, Yolonda Ross as Robyn Crawford and Mark Rolston as Clive Davis.

Houston’s vocal performances in the film will be sung by Deborah Cox. Some of the songs featured will be “The Greatest Love of All,” “I Will Always Love You,” “I’m Your Baby Tonight,” “I’m Every Woman” and Brown’s “Every Little Step.”

Whitney  premieres on Lifetime on Jan. 17 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. After the film, the cable network will broadcast a one-hour documentary, Beyond the Headlines: Whitney Houston (10 p.m. ET/PT), that will take a look at the rise and fall of the singer and will feature interviews with close friends and colleagues.
