Woman Behind Wasabi Ginger Chips Wins Lay’s Contest

Ginger Wasabi Chips

America has chosen the Wasabi Ginger-flavored Lay’s potato chip as the winner of  the “Do Us a Flavor” contest, making Meneko Spigner McBeth $1 million richer.

On Monday night, Frito-Lay announced that McBeth, a registered nurse from Deptford, NJ, was the grand prize winner of its “Do Us a Flavor” contest to create a new flavor chip for the American snack brand.

McBeth’s wasabi-ginger flavor beat out entries for cappuccino, mango salsa, and cheddar-bacon mac and cheese flavors.

The inspiration behind the flavor stems from McBeth’s cultural background.

“It was inspired by my grandmother: She’s Japanese, and I grew up eating her sushi,” McBeth told Yahoo. “I wasn’t allowed to have the wasabi until I got older, and when I was [allowed to try it], I fell in love with it!”

Later on in college, McBeth visited her “first real sushi restaurant” and became acquainted with pickled ginger. “The flavor of the two of them in combination, I love it. I said, ‘[Why not] try it on a chip? It can’t hurt!'”

For her winning idea, McBeth will receive $1 million or a portion of the year in sales—whichever figure is larger.
