Saturday Night Live has added another face to its cast- and it’s another African American woman. Leslie Jones joins the sketch comedy show as a regular cast member.
Jones first auditioned for the coveted spot last fall after an online campaign pointed out the lack of diversity amongst SNL‘s cast. Lorne Michaels, the shows executive producer, launched a special casting call on the West Coast. Jones made it to the final 12, but Sasheer Zamata was ultimately offered the role.
Though she was not initially given a role, she was added as a writer and made appearances on the show’s Weekend Update.
Apparently the comedienne made an great impression on Michaels, leading him to bring her on as a full-time cast member. She will also be keeping her gig as one of the show’s writers.
Jones will make her first official appearance as a full-time cast member when Jim Carrey hosts the show Oct. 25.
