Civil rights leaders are calling upon Django Unchained actress Daniele Watts for an apology to the LAPD after she claimed to be racially profiled and handcuffed for kissing her white boyfriend in public.
The news went viral, but as it turns out, the couple was being investigated after LAPD received several phone calls regarding lewd conduct and indecent exposure in a parked vehicle. Civil rights leaders called the incident a blatant act of racial profiling when Watts and her boyfriend, Brian Lucas, took to social media to say officers accused her of being a prostitute because she is black and her boyfriend is white.
However, an audio file recorded by a sergeant captured Watts’ heated exchange with police during which she used the N-word and refused to provide indentification, which further defended the officers’ actions for detaining the actress. Therefore, Project Islamic Hope President Najee Ali and Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable Earl Ofari Hutchinson and other activist leaders held a meeting on Friday (Sept. 19) to denounce Watts after the recent incident.
“We have nothing to be embarassed about. She should be embarassed,” said Ali. “She’s the one that told the lie. She came and stated she’s a victim of racial profiling. We found out later on based on new information that she wasn’t. We didn’t make a rush to judgment. We can to aid a victim who we thought was victimized. For us, she’s wrong. That’s why we’re demanding Daniele Watts apologize not to LAPD but to our community.’
Nonetheless, Watts issued a statement through her publicist in which she simply stated: “It is a constitutional right that we do not have to present ID to any member of law enforcement unless we are being charged with a crime.”
Well, there you have it…
