Serena Williams Wins 18th Grand Slam Title

Serena Williams is a champion again!

The top-ranked tennis star defeated Caroline Wozniacki 6-3,6-3, on Sunday (Sept. 7) at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens to capture her third consecutive U.S. Open Final and sixth overall.

Williams now has 18 Grand Slam Titles, tying her with tennis legends Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. She is now just four behind Steffi Graf, who holds the all time record of 22 career grand slam single titles in the open era.

The 32-year-old accepted her award along with an 18 carat gold Tiffany’s bracelet marking her achievement. In addition, she was presented with a check for $4 million, comprising of her tournament winnings and a bonus for being the dominant player in the recent American events.

After the win, Wozniacki took to Instagram to congratulate her opponent and friend.

“Thank you everybody for the incredible support these weeks! It was a good run, unfortunately lost to a better player today!” Wozniacki said on Instagram. “Congrats @serenawilliams on #18, well deserved!”

Now that Williams has reached her 18th win, will she be going for the record of 22?

“Hasn’t even been three hours, and I have already mentioned 19,” she said. ” Oh, gosh. So, yeah, but not 22. I’m taking it one at a time.”
