Micheal Strahan, Nicole Murphy Split Announced During His Big Weekend

Michael Strahan was reportedly “blindsided” when the ending of his  five-year engagement to  Nicole Murphy was announced over the weekend. The news came just as the  former NY Giants player was to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

A source close to the couple told TMZ Sports that the break up was “a long time coming” and that Michael’s team had no plans to announce the split over the weekend. He definitely did not plan to announce it on the same day as the biggest moment of his career.

The source also said that Michael’s friends believe that Nicole, or someone close to her, purposely made the announcement in attempt to ruin Michael’s big moment. Nicole’s rep confirmed the news to PEOPLE the night before  the induction (Aug. 1).

“They love each other very much, but with the distance and work schedule it has been hard to maintain the relationship,” the rep tells PEOPLE.

It seemed a little obvious that Strahan truly was in the dark about the announcement when he opened his Hall of Fame speech with, “This has been the best weekend of my life.”

The pair got engaged in 2009, two years after they began dating  in 2007. Nicole, who was previously married to Eddie Murphy for 13 years, had five children with the comedian. Michael had four children from two previous marriages.

What do you think about the time of the announcement? Deliberate or coincident?
