Alexandra Shipp Cast for Aaliyah Biopic, Wendy Williams to Executive Produce

The Aaliyah biopic is moving forward with production. Production was on hold after Disney darling Zendaya dropped out last month, but now a new actress is on board for the Lifetime movie.

Just a few hours ago, talk show host Wendy Williams that she has joined the project as executive producer and actress Alexandra Shipp will take on the title role.

“I’m excited to exec produce the Aaliyah @lifetimetv movie w/ @DebraMChase. Prod starts later this month and @AlexShipppp will play Aaliyah,” she tweeted today.

Nickolodeon star Alexandra Shipp takes over for  Zendaya Coleman, who exited the project after production issues, including problems obtaining the rights to Aaliyah’s music.

“We are sad Zendaya will no longer portray Aaliyah. Production is currently on hold,” Lifetime wrote in a statement posted on its Twitter account on June 29.

Much lesser known than the former lead actress, Shipp’s credits include television shows “House of Anubis,” where she plays KT Rush and “Ray Donovan” where she’s made an appearance as the character Tiffany. She is also set to star in the Drumline 2: A New Beat, which will air on VH1.

The project, titled Aaliyah: Princess of R&B, is set to resume filming this summer with a fall premiere date planned.
