Zendaya Pulls Out Of Lifetime’s Aaliyah Biopic

BET AWARDS '14 - Arrivals

Lifetime announced two weeks ago that Zendaya Coleman was casted as the starring role in an upcoming biopic about the late R&B singer Aaliyah.

Originally honored by the opportunity to play one of her greatest inspirations, Zendaya revealed her decision to pull out of the production at the BET Awards over the weekend.

“Because it’s someone that I honor and I respect so much, it can’t be done halfway,” she said. “I feel [that] production-wise, everything just felt a little rushed.”

In a press release posted by Lifetime in June also announced that Zendaya would re-record four of Aaliyah’s songs for the film, but according to a source at E!News, they were experiencing problems obtaining the rights to Aaliyah’s music.

This may have had something to do with the fact that Aaliyah’s family is 100 percent opposed to the small screen adaptation for Aaliyah’s story – wanting a feature film instead – with plans to block Lifetime from acquiring those rights. Well, it must have worked because Zendaya sure didn’t feel like the production was ready to start filming…

However, the 17-year-old actress is open to playing Aaliyah in the future if another opportunity comes around.

“By all means, when the right project comes along and it’s done the right way, I’ll be the first person ready to play Aaliyah, but this wasn’t the right one for me,” she said. “I’ve been into Aaliyah since I was little, so there wasn’t too much getting into character. I always pretend I’m her anyway.”

With production on pause, who do you think Lifetime could cast for the starring role as Aaliyah?
