EXCLUSIVE: Kandi Burruss Talks Life After Wedding and Her New Show

This past year has been an eventful year for Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss. She filmed one of the most intense seasons of RHOA, produced a successful play, planned a wedding and undeterred by doubters married the love of her life. Despite the whirlwind of emotions, in true Kandi-fashion, the singer-turned-reality star successfully did exactly what she had her mind set on. However, it was not easy.

In a new UrbanMecca exclusive, the music mogul discussed her new play, A Mother’s Love,  the moments leading up to her extravagant wedding and life after being marriage on Thursday.

Business saavy and strong-minded, Kandi is one of the most successful on RHOA, but with her many accomplishments, she’s not one to flaunt her money to everyone.

“Before I was ever on Housewives, people didn’t know that I had anything and I liked it that way. I would rather be the underdog, I feel like people relate to the person who is more humble… I don’t even like the title of what a rich b—h is, they can keep that title,” she laughs.

Among her lucrative projects, was her first musical A Mother’s Love, which follows a daughter’s rollercoaster relationship with her mother who is not accepting of her decisions about love.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because the stage play was written by Kandi and though it was not directly based on her life, it was inspired by her own life experiences.

Because of the origin of the story line, the star, who is the leading lady of the play, admits that at some points things got a little emotional for her.

“For me [it’s emotional] when I have the conversation with my mom and I was telling her that she’s just going to have to deal with it or not be a part of my life,”she admits. “That’s something I’ve never said to my mother face-to-face… She know’s that I felt strongly about my relationship, but I never really just sat her down and said, ‘hey, we’re getting married, this is what we’re doing.. I’ve said it, but I don’t think it was as deep as it is in the musical so I think that part was emotional for me.”

The play, which was the first joint business venture for Kandi and Todd and is now going on a national tour, opened at the Rialto Center for the Arts in Atlanta on Friday, November 22, 2013. The play ran for five shows, packing in audiences full of fans and stars including the talented Tyler Perry.

“I was so excited that he showed up!” she beamed. “He is one of the people that I look up to, and if I could accomplish even a little piece of what he’s already done, that would be big for me.”

Just last month, Kandi tied the knot with Todd in a beautiful Atlanta wedding, which Bravo cameras captured for the upcoming spin-off The Real Housewives of Atlanta: Kandi’s Wedding. This week, the network announced the premiere date will be June 1 at 8/9 PM EST.

Fans can expect to see everything the couple went through to pull of the Coming to America-themed wedding in four-and-a-half weeks. As seen in the newly released trailer, the moments before the couple’s big day included tears, their mother’s almost coming to blows and lots of stress.

So, now that the newlywed couple has made it past walking down the aisle how are they doing? According the former Xscape singer, things are not exactly how she hoped for it to be. “He is producing a show now and it is being taped in LA and now, we’ve gone straight into being married and having a long-distance relationship.”

But, distance won’t keep this wife away from her husband. Back and forth flights from Atlanta to Los Angeles are completely worth it for the man she loves, “That’s marriage,” she says and then gushes, “I love being Mrs. Tucker now.”
