Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has filed for divorce from Ashton Wilson, his wife of two years.

Wilson announced the split in a statement Wednesday explaining his “difficult decision.”

“I have made the difficult decision to file for divorce. Clearly, decisions like these don’t come easy. Ashton and I respectfully ask for prayers, understanding and privacy during this difficult time. Moving forward, I will have no further comment on this personal matter.”

Russell and Ashton met in high school and continued a long distance college relationship before becoming engaged in 2010.

The pair married in January 2012 after Russell finished his college career at Wiscousin and a few months before he was chosen as a third round draft pick by the Seahawks.

They have no children together.

Wilson, 25, led the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl in February, beating the Denver Broncos 43-8 at MetLife Stadium.
