Morgan Freeman Returns For ‘Dolphin Tale’ Sequel

Premiere Of "The LEGO Movie" - Arrivals

Morgan Freeman reprises his role in the Warner Bros. Pictures franchise for Dolphin Tale 2! As if the first of its series wasn’t already so adorable and cheesy, the sequel is set to introduce another dolphin into the scene. It’s been several years since the original proved to be a stealth hit, making close to $100 million in box offices worldwide in 2011.

The film’s dramatic storyline is based on the real-life plight of the 5-month-old dolphin named Winter, who struggled for life after her tail was destroyed in crab trap in 2005. A leading prosthetic expert heard about Winter and built her an artificial fin to help her swim properly, inspiring the role of Dr. Cameron McCarthy played by actor Morgan Freeman.

“When she lost her tail, there was some talk of perhaps putting her down. No dolphin had ever survived this way,” says Director Charles Martin Smith. “But the people who worked with Winter saw such life and spirit in her. They fought to keep her alive.”

However, now that Winter’s surrogate mother has passed, the team at Clearwater Marine Aquarium must find her a companion as soon as possible because according to USDA regulations, dolphins cannot be housed alone; their social behaviors require them to be paired with other dolphins. The sneak peak trailer for Dolphin Tale 2 introduces a baby dolphin and calls her Hope.
