Classic Broadway Revival Of ‘A Raisin in the Sun’ Stars Denzel Washington

There’s a new Broadway revival of ‘A Raisin in the Sun’ this spring starring Tony-winning stage actor Denzel Washington. Rehearsals haven’t begun, but tickets for the Lorraine Hansberry classic are already on sale and set to being previews at the Barrymore Theatre on March 8 through June 15.

Washington says his return to the stage is a way of “sharpening his instrument” for acting.

“That’s how I started,” he said. “I believe that’s where you really learn how to act. It’s alive, it’s a living thing, and you get an energy from the people.”

‘A Raisin in the Sun’ chronicles the lives of an African-American family in Chicago during the late ‘50s, specifically matriarch Lena, who intends on buying a home in an all-white neighborhood when she receives a hefty insurance check. Her son dreams of owning a liquor store and her daughter dreams of attending medical school, while tensions of prejudice and drama unfold.

It is the first play written by an African-American woman to be produced on Broadway, and the big screen. Grab your tickets now for the latest production of the classic drama as Washington fills big shoes of the role made famous by the legendary Sydney Poitier.
