Oprah Winfrey, Chiwetel Ejiofor & More Grace Cover of ESSENCE Magazine’s Hollywood Issue

Essence magazine invited the stars behind the biggest year in black cinema for the cover of their March 2014 collector’s issue.

Oprah Winfrey, Forest Whitaker, Michael B. Jordan and Chiwetel Ejiofor are all featured on the star-studded cover of the special edition issue.

In the issue, the Hollywood heavyweights take a moment to discuss the major roles played on the big screen and some of the challenges faced along the way in their unforgettable roles.

In preparation for her role as Gloria Gaines in the critically acclaimed film Lee Daniels’ The Butler, Oprah Winfrey’s acting coach instructed to be more sexy.

“I don’t think of myself as being sexy and I’m not even sure how one is sexy,” she admits. Her acting coach instructed her: “Every time Gloria walks, pretend that she has a tail. And when Gloria sits down, she doesn’t sit without making sure there’s room for her tail.”

Chiwetel Ejiofor has been praised for his role in 12 Years a Slave, but getting into character for the role of Solomon Northup was rather difficult for the standout actor. According to Essence, he described it as walking the “fine line between sanity and insanity.”

“Even though there were emotional moments to shoot, overall I think every member of the cast and crew was there for one reason: They felt it was a tale that deserved to be told,” he added.

Lupita Nyong’o is not on the cover, but the magazine couldn’t leave Hollywood’s newest “it” girl out as they cover her beauty in “The Many Faces of Lupita.”

The March issue of Essence is on newsstands February 10.
