The father of R&B superstar Mary J. Blige is in critical condition after his ex-girlfriend stabbed him in the neck on Thursday, police said.

Thomas Blige of Battle Creek, 63, had to undergo surgery after what police say appeared to be a domestic dispute. He confronted Cheryl Ann White, who lives in the same apartment complex, after he discovered his tires were slashed.

Michael Thomas, Blige’s roommate, said Blige “heard some hissing sounds that he heard from outside, where the air was being let out of his tires.” Blige reportedly came back into the apartment and yelled for Thomas, who found Blige “bleeding profusely” from the stab wounds to his throat, side and arm.

White, 50, was arrested at the scene and charged with assault with intent to murder. It’s unclear if Mary J. Blige, who is widely reported for being estranged from her father, is aware of the incident.
