IAC Fires PR Executive Over Racist AIDS Tweet

Media company IAC fired an employee after she posted a remark which invoked many complains on Saturday, Dec. 21. Justin Sacco, the company PR executive, tweeted: “Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!” The tweet was made just before she left for Cape Town, South Africa, and went viral, creating a social media firestorm.

An IAC spokesperson released a statement saying that the offensive comments was not a reflection of the views and values of the media corporation. “There is no excuse for the hateful statements that have been made and we condemn them unequivocally,” they said, along with the fact that they took the issue very seriously and parted ways with the individual they had otherwise known to be “a decent person at core.”

Many say they feel sorry for Sacco, regardless of how offensive her comment was, because she was unable to defend herself during her 12-hour flight when all the madness began. The incident – Boing Boing called “the tweet heard round the world” – is a glaring reminder that every word uttered on the internet could be heard by seemingly everyone on the internet, sometimes with serious consequences.
