Beyonce Surprises Fans With Unannounced Album Release

Beyoncé surprised her fans by releasing her fifth studio album with no prior announcement. The self-titled album was released just minutes before midnight Friday (Dec. 13) morning exclusively on iTunes.

Described as a “visual” experience, her fifth studio effort comes with 14 new tracks and 17 music videos.

“I see music,” says Beyoncé about her decision to create a visual album in a press release.  “It’s more than just what I hear.  When I’m connected to something, I immediately see a visual or a series of images that are tied to a feeling or an emotion, a memory from my childhood, thoughts about life, my dreams or my fantasies.  And they’re all connected to the music.”

The 32-year-old singer chose a very unconventional route for releasing her new album– the first since “4” in 2011– by only alerting her fans via Facebook.

“I didn’t want to release my music the way I’ve done it,” she continues.  “I am bored with that.  I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans.   There’s so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans.  I felt like I didn’t want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it’s ready and from me to my fans.”

While features on the album include Jay Z, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams and Drake to name a few, the most notable is her feature with daughter Blue Ivy in the song “Blue.”
