Givenchy is continuing its streak of attention grabbing campaigns, and for Spring 2014, the label has casted legendary neo-soul singer Erykah Badu as its new face.
Creative director of Givenchy, Riccardo Tisci, has an eye for in casting and his decision to choose the singer was not a difficult one.
“Erykah, she’s an icon—come on!” Tisci told Style.com. “She’s one of the most stylish women I’ve met in my life. She’s got such a good sense of proportion, of colors.”
The latest collection for the French fashion house will feature a combination of African and Japanese influenced ensembles. Badu will be joined in the campaign by models Maria Borges, newcomer Riley and Asia Chow.
Tisci, who is credited for discovering models Joan Smalls and Maria Borges amongst others, is known for adding diversity to has campaigns. As for the rest of the fashion world, he hopes they will catch up soon.
“It’s 2013. Everybody’s being so cool about Instagram, about Facebook, any media — everybody’s being so open. At the end of the day, why are not so many black girls or Latin girls in shows? When you have an American president who is black! When I see this happening, it’s quite sad, I think. People can be so avant-garde, so advanced, but actually not, because people are still making differences between skin color.”
Erykah Badu, who has released six studio albums, has also appeared in campaigns for Tom Ford.
