Actress Kerry Washington, playing Olivia Pope on ABC’s hit drama ‘Scandal’, made the cover of the August issue on Vanity Fair and explained how she feels about her character in the show.

“What I think is cool about Olivia is that she fully owns being a women,” said Washington about her character who is loosely based on Judy Smith, a real-life D.C. crisis-management expert.

The 36-year-old said, “There’s a very nurturing sense of ‘I’m going to take care of you-don’t worry about it. I’m gonna be your mom in this situation; you come stay in my office, have a cup of tea, and let my gladiators take care of you.’ There’s something very maternal about it. But there’s also something very executive about her, and I mean ‘executive’ in a presidential way.”

Washington reveals she had to do some studying to prep herself for her character’s role in the show. For example, she read “The Nine” by Jeffrey Toobin to get a better understanding of the Supreme Court machinations.

‘Scandal’ will return for its third season this fall, and the issue of Vanity Fair featuring Washington will hit newsstands July 9.
