MTV TRL Presents Lil Wayne

Recording artist Lil Wayne appears onstage during MTV’s ‘TRL’ on June 10, 2008 at MTV Studios in New York City.

The Carter 3, the new album by Lil Wayne, will be released on Tuesday, June 10. This will be the sixth solo album for Lil Wayne and third installment of Tha Carter series.

Lil Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne Carter, has entitled the album series Tha Carter based on the duality of his last name and the fictitious drug headquarters of Wesley Snipes’ character Nino Brown in the 1991 movie New Jack City.

“Lollipop,” the first single off of Tha Carter 3, is the most commercially successful song in Lil Wayne’s career thus far. The single topped the Billboard Hot 100, making it the first Top 10 single for Wayne as a solo artist, as well as his first #1 on the chart. It also gave him his first #1 on the Hot Rap Tracks.

The album is considered by many to be the most highly anticipated hip-hop album of 2008. However, on May 25, the album was leaked internationally. DJ Chuck T was responsible for the leak, citing retaliation for an interview conducted by Wayne, where he discredited all DJ’s and the mixtape scene days before.
