Verizon Wireless Teams Up HBCU Basketball Conference

Alumni, students and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) basketball fans can get involved in this year’s tournament as Verizon Wireless, operator of the nation’s most reliable wireless network, helps to kick off the competition as an official corporate sponsor of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association 2006 Basketball Tournament. As the competition heats up, Verizon Wireless and the CIAA, the oldest and largest Historically Black Colleges and Universities Conference in the country, are taking the on-court action to the next level with exciting wireless communications services that are designed to keep fans informed on the latest information during the tournament, which Charlotte will host for the first time February 26 – March 4, 2006.

Verizon Wireless is offering CIAA basketball fans a variety of TXT 2 WIN contests, text messaging alerts and an opportunity to select the “Tournament Dream Team” voting directly from their mobile phone headsets.

In addition, as part of the sponsorship, Verizon Wireless will team up with the CIAA to invite basketball fans attending the tournament to donate no- longer-used wireless phones and accessories to benefit victims of domestic violence through the Verizon Wireless HopeLine(R) program. Fans can drop no-longer-used wireless phones and accessories in HopeLine drop boxes that will be located at the Ford Fan Experience March 2-4th in the Verizon Wireless booth inside the Charlotte Convention Center.

“We are absolutely delighted that Verizon Wireless has partnered with the CIAA,” stated Leon Kerry, CIAA Commissioner. “This partnership now allows our fans to get cutting-edge Verizon Wireless products and services while raising awareness about domestic violence prevention at the same time.”

“This is terrific opportunity for Verizon Wireless to support a tournament with a long history and tradition, adding a new way for fans to enjoy the action through modern communications services,” said Jerry Fountain, President, Verizon Wireless Carolinas/Tennessee Region. “We are proud of our HopeLine program and value our established relationships with local government officials and organizations like the North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCCADV) to help raise awareness throughout the year.

During tournament week, Verizon Wireless customers with TXT Messaging-capable phones can enter various TXT 2 WIN promotions and TXT Seat Upgrades, or sign up for TXT alerts to get real time tournament game results including top scorers for all the matches, VIP access and daily listings of the exciting off-the-court social events taking place. Die-hard fans can also weigh in to select the “Verizon Wireless Tournament All Star Team” by sending a TXT Message vote right through their mobile phone headset.
